Home DNA Kit Testing
A home DNA test kit lets you collect DNA samples in the comfort and privacy of your own home. TestMark DNA provides complete home testing kits that include everything you need - sterile buccal swabs, step-by-step instructions, and prepaid return packaging. Home kits deliver the same laboratory accuracy as in-person testing and are ideal for those who prefer a private, convenient option for personal knowledge testing.
How the Home DNA Kit Works
The process begins when you contact TestMark DNA to order your home DNA test kit. After discussing your needs during a free consultation, we ship the kit directly to your address. The kit arrives in discreet, unmarked packaging to protect your privacy. Inside, you will find individually packaged sterile buccal swabs for each participant, detailed collection instructions with diagrams, consent forms, and a prepaid return envelope for shipping samples back to the laboratory.
To collect your sample, you simply remove the sterile swab from its packaging and rub it firmly against the inside of your cheek for 30 to 60 seconds. This painless process collects skin cells from your cheek lining that contain your complete DNA. Each participant uses their own individually labeled swab. After collection, the swabs are placed in the provided envelopes, sealed, and the entire package is mailed back to the laboratory using the prepaid return packaging.
Once the laboratory receives the samples, DNA extraction and analysis begin immediately. The same advanced STR marker analysis used for in-person collections is applied to home kit samples. Results are typically available within 3 to 5 business days from the date the laboratory receives your samples.
Important: Home Kits Are for Personal Knowledge Only
Home DNA test results cannot be used in court, immigration proceedings, child custody cases, or any other legal matter. This is because home collection does not include the chain-of-custody safeguards required for legally admissible results. Without professional identity verification, witnessed collection, and sealed chain-of-custody documentation, there is no independent proof of who provided the samples.
If you need DNA test results for any legal purpose, you must schedule an in-person collection at a certified TestMark DNA collection site. Legal testing follows strict protocols including government-issued photo ID verification, photographs of all participants, witnessed sample collection by a trained professional, and documented chain of custody from collection through laboratory analysis.
Not sure which option is right for you? Call TestMark DNA for a free consultation. Our team will help you understand the differences and recommend the appropriate test based on your specific needs and circumstances.
Available Home Kit Tests
TestMark DNA offers home DNA kits for a variety of relationship tests. The collection method is the same for all tests - each participant provides a buccal swab sample. The laboratory then performs the specific analysis required for the relationship being tested.
Paternity Test Kit
Determine if a man is the biological father of a child. Requires samples from the alleged father and the child. Including the mother is optional but recommended.
Maternity Test Kit
Confirm if a woman is the biological mother of a child. Requires samples from the alleged mother and the child.
Sibling Test Kit
Determine if two individuals are full siblings, half siblings, or unrelated. Requires samples from both alleged siblings. Including a known parent strengthens results.
Grandparent Test Kit
Establish grandparent-grandchild biological relationships. Requires samples from the grandparent(s) and the grandchild. Testing both grandparents is recommended.
Tips for Successful Sample Collection
Follow these guidelines to ensure your home kit samples produce the best possible results. Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum for at least 30 minutes before collecting your sample. Food particles and other substances in the mouth can contaminate the sample or interfere with DNA extraction.
When swabbing, apply firm pressure and rotate the swab as you move it along the inside of your cheek. You want to collect as many skin cells as possible. Allow the swab to air dry for a few minutes before placing it in the collection envelope. Do not touch the swab tip with your fingers or any other surface.
For infants and young children, the same cheek swab method works perfectly. Hold the child still and gently but firmly swab the inside of their cheek. Babies may fuss during collection, but the process takes only 30 to 60 seconds and causes no pain or discomfort.
Mail the completed samples as soon as possible after collection. While DNA on dried swabs remains stable for several weeks at room temperature, prompt shipping ensures the fastest turnaround time for your results. Keep the sealed package away from extreme heat and direct sunlight until you can mail it.
Privacy and Confidentiality
TestMark DNA takes your privacy seriously at every step of the process. Home DNA kits are shipped in plain, unmarked packaging with no indication of the contents. Results are delivered through secure, confidential channels and shared only with the person who ordered the test. We never disclose testing information or results to unauthorized third parties. Your genetic information is handled with the highest level of confidentiality and is used solely for the purpose of the test you ordered.
